You’re probably aware that your computer keyboard is dirtier than a typical toilet. When you’re finished sanitising this vital workspace, don’t forget to clean its equally filthy neighbour, the mousepad.
Mousepads don’t show a lot of grime, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t germs lurking on the surface. Mousepads take a lot of abuse, whether for work or gaming, and they definitely need some TLC.
Cleaning a mousepad, thankfully, is not a difficult task. The following method (from gaming website Glorious) can be used for any fabric or plastic mousepad that lacks any type of technology, such as a USB port.
- To begin, soak the mousepad in a sink or bowl of water and a mild soap. A gentle shampoo or even a squirt of hand soap will be enough.
- Scrub the mousepad gently with a soft brush, sponge, or washcloth.
- Rinse the mousepad with cold water until all of the soap has been removed.
- Finally, use a hand towel to pat the mousepad dry. Allow it to completely dry before using it again. This process takes at least 24 hours.
Some fabric mousepads can even be machine washed! If this is the case with yours, take the following steps:
- Add a small amount of liquid soap to the washing machine and wash the mousepad.
- Run the machine on the gentle cycle with only cold water.
- Remove from the washing machine and air dry for at least 24 hours.
Plastic mousepads can be cleaned quickly and easily without the use of water. Try this Real Simple method:
- Spray the layer of the plastic mousepad lightly with cleaning spray.
- Wipe away the cleaning spray with a clean cloth. Use a little extra elbow grease if any areas are surely dirty.
- Finish by wiping it down with a disinfectant wipe.
- Allow it to dry completely before using the mousepad again.
There is no hard and fast rule for how frequently you should clean the mousepad, but once every three months, as well as after any illness, is a good place to start.
