Everyone appreciates a good podcast or playlist delivered via AirPods. What we don’t like is the icky-sticky gunk that accumulates on these tiny marvels over time. It’s not just a matter of appearances. When earwax, dirt, and grease accumulate on AirPods, the ear canal becomes infected.
Fortunately, AirPods have been around long enough for sanitising methods to be effective. The case is included! Apple’s instructions for AirPods and AirPods Pro are as follows.
To begin, here is a list of things NOT to do:
- Never immerse or operate the device in water.
- To clean AirPods, avoid using sharp objects or abrasive materials.
- Do not clean the speaker mesh with a disinfecting wipe. These can be used safely on exterior surfaces.
- Never put anything in the charging ports because it may damage the metal charging contacts.
Cleaning supplies include a dry cotton swab, a soft lint-free cloth (such as a microfiber cloth), and a bottle of 70% isopropyl alcohol (aka rubbing alcohol), which is available at any local pharmacy.
How to Clean AirPods:
- Gently clean the speaker meshes and microphone with the cotton swab. Some sources advise using a fine-edged tool, such as a toothpick or pin, but Apple advises against it. Using a swab or a tool, gently dig out any earwax around the speaker’s edge. Do not use a tool to pierce the speaker. That would be unfortunate.
- Remove dirt and grime from the rest of the AirPod’s surface area with the cloth.
- If the AirPods are polluted with something that could stain or damage them (such as shampoos, perfumes, detergent, or acidic foods), you must go one step further. Dampen a clean cloth gently with water to wash the affected areas. Then, using a dry cloth, pat them dry.
- Do not use or store the AirPods in the charging case until they are completely dry.
- AirPods Pro also has silicone tips that cover the earbuds, which must be cleaned. Remove them, then thoroughly rinse the tips in water. No cleaners or soaps should be used. Wipe them dry, then reattach them only when completely dry.
How to Clean the AirPod Case:
- Wipe down the charging case once more with a dry cloth. If it really needs it, add a very small amount of isopropyl alcohol to the cloth before cleaning. Alternatively, a disinfecting wipe can be used. There should be no liquid anywhere near the charging ports.
- AirPods should not be placed in the case until they are completely dry.
- If the Lightning connector has any debris, gently scrub it out with a soft-bristled brush, such as an old toothbrush, that is both clean and dry.
- This cleaning method will become second nature after a few attempts!
